The Tropical Garden - the beginning

Since /t is interested in my tropical garden I thought I should show how it all began. After we removed everything that was standing and brought in the bulldozer to create the levels which was just a slope in the property, the plants that we had carefully hand picked were planted. This was all six years ago. Much has changed in this time and the results speak for themselves.

    right

    well, i like
    what you've done
    with the place, lexcen

your back yard here looks to be about average size, but the impression one gets from your garden is that it must be much bigger -- you manage to pack a lot into small spaces, i think

anyway, you've done a great job with it all -- really beautiful!

    you are a botanical artist!

    /t.

Are all the plants on an automatic watering system or do you hand water? The yard is large enough that watering by hand would take some time. Another question! What kind of mulch is that it's a wonderful color and makes the green more intense? At a former home I mulched all my flower beds with bark mulch and was overrun with slugs, is it the same in OZ? One more question! Do you compost? I looked at all your pictures very closely and didn’t see any hint of a compost pile.

  3. Thanks /t. It is in fact a huge backyard but the different areas do in fact make it look average.

az, yes I do have an automatic watering system installed.
The ground cover is crushed volcanic scoria.
Snails are a problem but only for soft leaved plants like clivias.
No I don't compost but I do use cow manure which I've found to be the best all round fertilizer.
